Mitochondrial dysfunction is involved in the pathogenesis of several cardiovascular diseases, including myocardial infarction, cardiomyopathies of various etiologies, arrhythmias, atherosclerosis, and hypertension.

The mechanisms of mitochondrial involvement in cardiovascular disease are manifested in the following ways.

• Oxidative phosphorylation of fatty acids and ATP synthesis in the cardiovascular system
• Controls Ca²⁺ flux
• Physiological inflammation of the cardiovascular system
• Maintenance of renewal and integrity of the cardiovascular system

Since the heart is highly dependent on mitochondrial oxidative energy, it is understandable that defects in mitochondrial structure and function can be found in association with different cardiac diseases, and mitochondria is a potential treatment target.

Moreover, various syndromes that contain numerous clinical symptoms of mitochondrial dysfunction generally have cardiac features.
