Neurodegenerative diseases (NDs) comprise a diverse set of pathological processes involving progressive neuronal dysfunction, degeneration and death, leading to incurable and debilitating diseases.

Many genetic factors have been identified (Table 1), and more importantly, almost all NDs exhibit impaired mitochondrial energy metabolism. As an example, dysfunction of respiratory chain complexes can all lead to different NDs (Table 2).

Therefore, mitochondrial gene expression profiles, biochemical and bioenergetic properties are the focus of research on NDs and are recognized indicators in disease mechanism and therapy studies.
